Trump Executes Name Change for Department of Defense

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the “War Bureau,” reverting back to an earlier title for the agency. This change aligns with their recent initiatives to foster a “warrior spirit” within the Pentagon, a perspective both Trump and the Secretary of Defense have shown interest in.

According to White House officials, this change was planned to be announced, and the executive order specifies that “Department of War” will serve as a secondary title. It also mentions the title “Secretary of War” for the position currently held by the Secretary of Defense.

The order instructs Pentagon officials to propose necessary legislative and enforcement measures to make this change permanent. White House officials indicated that this might require adjustments to public websites and signage around the Pentagon, including the renaming of certain facilities.

Trump commented that there is a compelling history associated with the term “War Bureau,” emphasizing its significance. He expressed that Americans often remember the victories from past wars, correlating these achievements with the propagated title.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses, whom Trump has referred to as the “war chief,” echoed similar sentiments during interviews, highlighting the intention to cultivate a stronger military mindset within the department.

Hegses stated, “We aim to restore the warrior spirit in our department, focusing on offense rather than just defense. Names matter, and they carry weight.” He noted that the U.S. used the title of “War Department” until 1949, when reforms under the National Security Act transitioned to the current naming conventions.

As plans move forward for this renaming initiative, there’s uncertainty whether Congressional approval will be required, given their authority in establishing federal agencies. Trump has expressed confidence in proceeding without lawmakers if needed.

The executive order marking this name change is noted to be Trump’s 200th order in his second term.
