Former Jets wide receiver Davante Adams shared an amusing story about his attempt to acquire jersey number 17 from Malaki Corey. This exchange was discussed on a podcast featuring Draymond Green and NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Adams, now with the Rams, recounted that he approached Corey the night before his first practice with the Jets, offering to pay “17 rucks” for the number, which Corey had worn the previous season.
Adams recalled saying, “I’m not trying to just take it from you. I’d rather earn it.” He mentioned that while he didn’t want to spend a fortune as a rookie, he was willing to negotiate. However, Corey stunned him with his response.
“He just said, ‘Hey, it’s great to have you, but I need a million dollars,'” Adams said, initially thinking it was a joke. The unexpected request caught him off guard, prompting him to chuckle.
With a bit of humor, Adams remarked that he needed to understand the dynamics of jersey numbers before he spoke to the media, playfully suggesting that “14 is open.” He expressed confidence that the number would suit him.
Corey’s bluntness surprised both Green and Schultz, with Green exclaiming, “What a god!” Over time, Adams mentioned feeling less upset about the incident and even found it intriguing. Ultimately, he managed to get the number without parting with cash by following the necessary steps, and he noted that respect grew between him and Corey in practice.
Adams, who had a good rapport with the young receiver drafted from Western Kentucky, reflected positively on their interactions on the field, noting moments of encouragement during practice.
Corey ended up playing nine games for the Jets in 2024 but had a disappointing season with only three catches, later signing onto the Browns’ practice squad.
During his time with the Jets, Adams recorded 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns over 11 games.
