Mother in custody after reportedly drowning her 4-year-old son

According to authorities and reports, an Amish mother named Ruth Miller is facing serious charges after allegedly drowning her 4-year-old son, Vinsen, in Lake Atwood. Court records reveal that the 40-year-old faces two counts of aggravated murder, along with two domestic violence charges and one count of child endangerment. This is stemming from a disturbing incident on August 23.

Miller, who is also the mother of three other children, was admitted to a mental health facility but was later released and taken to Tuskarawas County Jail.

It appears that Ruth and her husband, Marcus, believed they were spiritually compelled by God to act in a certain way. They reportedly jumped off the dock at Lake Atwood during a family camping trip. The local sheriff suggested that the couple may have been experiencing “spiritual delusions” as they sought to demonstrate their faith.

Witnesses recounted that after a late-night swim, Marcus informed his wife he would go back to the water but was found dead later that morning. His body was recovered by rescue teams after extensive searching.

Approximately two hours after Marcus was last seen alive, Ruth allegedly put her son, Vinsen, in a golf cart and drove erratically through the area. Police report that she then took Vinsen to the dock and killed him. His body was discovered that evening.

After the incident, Ruth drove a golf cart carrying her other children—a 15-year-old daughter and 18-year-old twin sons—away from the scene. Fortunately, they were unharmed and are with other family members now.

Ruth’s lawyer has indicated that he plans to argue for her acquittal on the grounds of severe mental illness. He stated that the evidence will reveal her mental state at the time of the incident, making it clear that she was not able to fully comprehend the wrongness of her actions.

The case is expected to focus on the question of insanity, with the lawyer conveying confidence in Ruth’s defense. A court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
