Donna Adelson criticized for courtroom outburst after being found guilty of orchestrating the murder-for-hire scheme against her former son-in-law.

A Florida dental office faced criticism from a judge recently after one of its employees had a public emotional reaction. This incident occurred in a Tallahassee courtroom when Donna Adelson, accused of orchestrating the murder of her former step-son, broke down in tears as the verdict was announced. The jury found her guilty in connection with the 2014 murder of Dan Markel, a law professor at Florida State University.

“Mrs. Adelson, please regain your composure,” Judge Stephen Everett instructed her firmly as she sobbed uncontrollably at the age of 75.

The judge eventually asked court officials to escort her from the courtroom due to her ongoing distress. Video footage captures her still sobbing as she looked down during the proceedings.

“I realize this is not the outcome you desired, but any further outbursts will not be tolerated,” the judge reminded her. If she couldn’t keep her composure, he warned, she might not be allowed to remain in the courtroom for the rest of the trial.

After giving her a brief moment to gather herself, the judge allowed her to return for the continuation of the hearing.

The murder trial, which lasted several weeks, focused on the prosecution’s argument that Adelson planned the murder of her son-in-law, Markel, who had previously been married to her daughter, Wendy.

Although Adelson’s legal team maintained that there was no direct evidence linking her to the crime, they attempted to shift the focus of the investigation onto her two adult children instead.

Prosecutors painted Adelson as a controlling figure within her wealthy South Florida family, emphasizing her motives and means to orchestrate the murder of her ex-son-in-law.

Markel was shot and killed in his garage on July 18, 2014. He was involved in a contentious custody battle with Wendy at that time.

Following his murder, justice remained elusive for nearly a decade until Charlie Adelson, Donna’s son, was arrested in April 2022.

Charlie and his girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, allegedly enlisted two hitmen—Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera—to carry out the assassination of Markel.

The two men, reportedly affiliated with the Latin Kings gang, executed the murder on that fateful morning in 2014.

Garcia has since been found guilty as the shooter and has received a life sentence, while Rivera accepted a plea deal that involves a 19-year prison term.

Both Magbanua and Charlie Adelson were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and are also serving life in prison.

Wendy Adelson has consistently denied any involvement in the crime and has not faced charges in connection with Markel’s death.

In a poignant impact statement following the verdict, Markel’s mother, Ruth, expressed her devastation: “We lost our treasure. Dan was only 41 when his life was so unjustly cut short. For over a decade, our family has endured unimaginable sorrow.”

Donna Adelson evaded capture for nearly ten years after the murder but was arrested in November 2023 while preparing to board a flight to Vietnam at Miami International Airport.

She claimed to be aware of the Southeast Asian country’s immigration policies regarding the US and suggested that US authorities would have acted if they truly wanted to apprehend her.

Adelson is currently awaiting a sentencing hearing after her lawyers successfully postponed the judge’s decision during the recent court session.
