Deputy PM Angela Rayner Steps Down Amid Property Tax Controversy

British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced her resignation from the left-leaning labor government on Friday, stating that she believed the Parliament’s Watchdog had breached the Minister’s Act due to her failure to pay property taxes.

Rayner, previously the Housing Minister, expressed that she “deeply regretted” stepping down and not consulting a tax expert when she purchased a £800,000 second home earlier this year.

A politician has acknowledged that she is £40,000 short of the correct property tax known as “stamp duty” for her secondary residence in Hove. Rayner affirmed she “takes full responsibility for this mistake,” emphasizing that it was “never my intention” not to pay the complete tax.

Despite her affluent lifestyle, dressed in striking clothes from prominent donors, the socialist politician attempted to reconnect with her working-class roots through her resignation statement.

“I was present in the office daily, striving to serve the working-class community from which I came, a group often overlooked by those in power.”

She added that family concerns were a significant factor in her decision to resign, mentioning that the scandal had placed “unbearable” pressure on her children.

Rayner had always been viewed as a potential successor to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but now a reshuffle of the cabinet may be imminent.

In her resignation letter, Starmer expressed sadness over her departure, stating he had great respect for her and her political achievements.

This resignation followed a report from an ethical watchdog, concluding that Rayner failed not only to pay the correct tax but also did not seek expert tax advice, despite recommendations to do so.

Magnus remarked on her “unhappiness,” pointing out they could not settle the correct stamp duty fees, especially given her high-ranking roles as Secretary of State for Housing, Regional Government, Local Government, and Deputy Prime Minister.

Commenting on her resignation, British leader Nigel Farage stated, “You can’t hold the position of Housing Secretary and evade a £40,000 stamp duty. It’s straightforward.” He further suggested that her departure might lead to a “splitting” within the Labour Party, with factions possibly vying for influence.
