Playoff Showdown: American First Policy Institute vs. Daily Callers
This week, the American First Policy Institute faced a tough challenge in the playoffs of the think tank softball league, ultimately losing to the Daily Callers’ expanded universe team with a final score of 11-8. It was a thrilling match filled with excitement and a bit of heckling from the crowd, but the Daily Callers emerged victorious for the second time this season, advancing to their first title game since 2022.
The game kicked off with AFPI getting off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning while keeping the Daily Callers to just one run at the bottom. The excitement in the crowd was palpable, especially when AFPI managed to score again in the second inning, stifling the Callers despite a promising leadoff double from one of their players.
As AFPI built a lead of 4-1, the dynamic began to shift, leading to increased tension. A standout moment was when Hybrid Sales Rep Jack made an impressive play, tagging out the Daily Callers’ best player at home plate. Witnesses said it was quite a show, with Jack launching a ball for the perfect throw while managing to apply the tag just in time.
After regrouping, the Daily Callers turned up the heat. The bottom of their lineup sparked a rally, though it initially seemed like they would falter after a lineout and a fielder’s choice. However, the hitting momentum soon picked up. Will Mitra hit a double to kick things off, followed by another double from Josh and a single from Reagan Reese. Jack’s double really stole the spotlight for the Callers, as it paved the way for some aggressive baserunning that resulted in a run.
Tension ramped up again with some controversial moments, like when Manfred “Hamtard” Went managed to reach first base amidst a questionable call that left players and observers debating. Berube, a member of the Callers, was incredulous at how confidently the umpire declared Went safe.
The match spiraled further into chaos when Houseman, stepping up to the plate, hit a double that brought in two more runs. Just as Went rounded the bases, a collision with an AFPI player occurred. Thankfully, the AFPI player was okay, though Went seemed to come away with a hamstring issue.
“We’ll have to see if he can play in the title game,” Houseman said, hinting at possible strategies moving forward.
The Daily Callers racked up seven runs in one inning, taking an 8-5 lead, while the Cabinet Secretary, who had been there to support AFPI, left after three innings. Yet, the game wasn’t over yet.
Both teams maintained solid defense in the fourth inning, though AFPI managed to narrow the gap by scoring two runs in the fifth, bringing the score to 8-7. But the Daily Callers responded with confidence, adding insurance runs in the sixth inning after a few consecutive hits to make it 11-7.
Heading into the seventh inning, AFPI only managed to score one more run before the game concluded. On the other side of the bracket, the Brookings Institute/FDD/Carnegie team pulled off a close victory against USAID, preparing for a rematch against the Daily Callers in the upcoming title game. If the Callers win next week, it will mark their third TTSL title, the first since 2022.
With that, the anticipation builds for the next exciting match.
