Sydney Sweeney Makes a Splash at TIFF
Sidney Sweeney certainly turned heads at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) on Friday. The 27-year-old actress dazzled in a striking pale pink gown, showcasing her fabulous figure ahead of the premier of her new film, “Christie.” Her attire certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
Returning to the spotlight, Sweeney has transformed her appearance significantly for her role as boxing legend Christy Martin in the upcoming sports biopic. She has gained over 30 pounds to accurately portray the character, and her new wavy brown mullet is a far cry from her usual blonde locks.
Sweeney’s transformation was first highlighted last October when she was spotted in North Carolina during filming. Recent images continue to reveal her commitment to embodying Martin, who is 57 years old.
To prepare for the part, Sweeney dedicated over three months to intense physical training, including boxing and weightlifting, alongside professional nutritional guidance to achieve the weight gain necessary for the role. Impressively, she decided against using a stunt double, sustaining bruises and even concussions during the shooting of the fight scenes.
“Every fight you see, we actually punch each other. It’s gotta be real,” Sweeney mentioned in an interview with Vanity Fair. It’s kind of fascinating how she feels so strongly about authenticity in her work. The film, which debuted to audiences on Friday, delves into the complex life of Martin, who made her boxing debut in 1989.
Throughout the 1990s, Martin rose to fame, notably defeating Deirdre Gogarty at the MGM Grand in 1996, becoming one of the most successful female boxers of her time. However, her life took a dark turn in 2010 when her husband, James, attacked her at their Florida home, leading to a near-fatal incident. It’s a gripping backstory that should make for an intriguing watch.
Sweeney’s upcoming role has sparked speculation about potential Oscar nominations, given the physical transformation that aligns with classic performances in boxing films. If nominated, it would mark her first Oscar nod—a huge step in her career.
The film has received positive reviews, with some critics labeling it Sweeney’s best performance to date. “Christy” is set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025, and there’s definitely a buzz surrounding its release.
Despite gaining attention for her role, Sweeney has also faced some controversy lately due to a recent American Eagle advertising campaign. In addressing the criticisms around the campaign, she kept her focus on promoting “Christie,” emphasizing, “I’m there to support my film and the team behind it.”
It will be interesting to see how the public reacts to both the film and her performance as it approaches the release date.
