Bucks Reopen Trade Talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo
The relationship between the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo, a key player for the team, seems to be evolving yet again.
Following unsuccessful trade discussions last February, the Bucks are reportedly “open” to exploring offers for the two-time MVP ahead of the upcoming NBA Draft, as noted by ESPN. There’s talk circulating that the team is once again looking for “young talent” or valuable draft picks, similar to their previous stance.
Antetokounmpo, who is currently 31, has dedicated his entire 13-year career to Milwaukee, famously leading the team to a championship in the 2020-21 season. However, the Bucks’ recent decline in competitive status has led to speculation about his future with the organization. There were hints that he might even prefer to play for the Knicks, which seemed significant enough that he reportedly communicated this to team executives last year.
ESPN has also indicated that several championship-worthy teams, including the Timberwolves, Cavaliers, Celtics, and Lakers, had reached out to Antetokounmpo before this year’s trade deadline, although nothing concrete came from those discussions.
With Antetokounmpo’s contract only guaranteed for one more year, the situation feels a bit tense. He has a player option looming for the following season, which adds another layer of uncertainty. Last May, after showing a willingness to leave Milwaukee, the Bucks decided to invest in Myles Turner, signing him to a $108.7 million contract in hopes of reaffirming their commitment to building a strong team around Giannis.
Yet, the season hasn’t gone as planned, and it briefly seemed like both the player and the team might move in different directions this winter.
As the Bucks approach the NBA Draft, having secured the No. 10 pick, they will need to balance Antetokounmpo’s future with their draft strategy. The first round of the draft is scheduled for June 23rd, marking a crucial moment for the team.
