Roblox Says It Will Implement Technology to Protect Kids from Adults as Grooming Controversy Grows

Roblox Enhances Safety Features Amid Concerns

This week, Roblox, the well-known online gaming platform, announced plans to extend its age estimation technology to all users and collaborate with the International Age Ratings Union. This initiative aims to establish standardized age and content ratings for the games and apps available on the platform. The decision comes in light of escalating concerns regarding child safety, particularly around grooming by predators on platforms frequented by children.

Roblox is responding to recent lawsuits focused on child safety. By the end of this year, the company plans to implement an age estimation system for users accessing its communication features, both voice and text chat. This system will analyze users’ selfies to gauge their age, hoping to create a safer environment for younger players.

The age estimation technology is set to work alongside other safety measures, including ID verification and validated parental consent. Roblox believes this layered approach will yield a more precise assessment of a user’s age, enhancing the safety of its younger audience. Additionally, the company plans to introduce further restrictions on communication between minors and adults on the platform.

Moreover, Roblox is teaming up with the International Federation of Age Ratings (IARC) to replace its content labels with internationally recognized ratings. For users in the U.S., this means they will see ratings from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), while those outside the U.S. will see ratings pertinent to their regions, such as GRAC in Korea or PEGI in Europe and the UK.

Recently, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrell filed a lawsuit against Roblox, claiming the platform has failed to protect children from potential predators.

This lawsuit expresses strong concerns about the platform’s lack of effective safety protocols that allegedly allow predators to exploit the environment. Murrell criticized Roblox for prioritizing user growth and profits over the safety of its younger users, highlighting that the platform is rife with harmful content.

The legal action came shortly after Roblox took measures against YouTubers who targeted individuals exploiting the platform.

These YouTubers were accused of engaging in dangerous dialogue with minors and encouraging them to move discussions outside the platform. Roblox asserted that it is dedicated to combating illegal activities, including child exploitation, through a specialized team and partnerships with law enforcement.

The earlier lawsuit outlines how predators use Roblox to connect with potential victims. It details a distressing experience of a minor who, believing the platform was safe, was instead approached by strangers with inappropriate requests after joining Roblox and Discord.

According to the allegations, the minor eventually faced coercive tactics involving offers of gift cards in return for explicit content. This troubling situation escalated, prompting the involvement of law enforcement following threats made by the predator.
