President Donald Trump has expressed criticism towards Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger for her stance on allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports and use girls’ bathrooms.
During a press briefing from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump reflected on how he believes Democrats have shifted away from their original support for workers. He mentioned that after signing an executive order reverting the Pentagon to its previous name, he found Democrats to be “mad.” “The Republicans have won millions of people, and the Democrats have lost millions,” he stated. “Honestly, I think they’re crazy. I don’t know what happened to them. They seem to be battling what I call Trump Mad Syndrome.”
He emphasized the positive changes Republicans have made, like tax cuts and favorable policies, while labeling Democrat policies as “very bad.”
Trump continued, “The Democrats want men to play in women’s sports.” He referred to Virginia’s Governor Youngkin, highlighting concerns that women candidates running against Republican contenders want to allow men to use women’s bathrooms.
These remarks come in the context of Lieutenant Colonel Wyn Earl Sears, a Republican gubernatorial contender, who has targeted Spanberger, saying she is “All-in for women’s sports boys and men in the locker room for women.”
Sears further responded to Trump’s comments by stating that Spanberger “supports girls sharing a locker room with naked men” and accused her of turning Virginia into a “sanctuary for violent criminals.” He called for the defeat of what he described as her “radical insanity” to protect the community.
In a report by ABC7 News, it was noted that when Spanberger’s campaign was contacted about her position on K-12 policies that allow students to choose bathrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity, as well as her views on biological men competing in girls’ sports, the campaign did not provide clear answers.
Spanberger’s campaign did issue a statement, asserting that she is a mother of three public school children in Virginia. They emphasized that her top priority is the safety of children and that parents should have the autonomy to make decisions concerning their children’s well-being.
