Russia carries out large airstrike on Ukraine, igniting a government building.

On Sunday, Russia executed its most extensive airstrike in Ukraine since the conflict began, igniting fires in government buildings in Kyiv and resulting in at least two fatalities.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that Russia deployed 810 Shahed-type drones, along with 9 Iskander-K cruise missiles and four Iskander-M ballistic missiles.

In response, Ukraine’s forces successfully intercepted 747 drones and four cruise missiles.

“A big thank you to our air defense teams for their efforts! Ukraine urgently requires additional air defense systems to shield our citizens from such unprecedented attacks,” the announcement emphasized.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Dennis Schmichal described this wave of assaults as the largest since the war’s inception. Although he did not provide exact casualty numbers, he noted that children were among the victims.

Images from the scene captured damage to government structures. Reporters from the Associated Press mentioned uncertainty over whether the smoke stemmed from direct hits or debris, as Russia had previously avoided targeting central governmental areas in Kyiv directly.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Swillidenko confirmed that at least two were killed and many were injured in the incident.

“For the first time, our government infrastructure sustained direct hits, with attacks on the roof and upper levels. Firefighters are battling the flames. We commend their bravery and commitment,” she stated.

“We will rebuild what has been lost,” she added. “However, we cannot bring back those lives. Russia continues its campaign of terror and violence against our people daily.”

She urged the public to confront this fear with action rather than mere words.

“We desperately need to intensify sanctions on Russian oil and gas, pushing for new measures that will affect the Kremlin’s military operations. Most importantly, Ukraine requires weapons. Only a show of strength can counter fear and prevent further casualties among Ukrainians,” she asserted.

The attacks have prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to express his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has struggled to gain ground in recent weeks as President Trump attempted to broker an end to the hostilities in Ukraine.
