Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani from New York City has defended his proposal for a government-run grocery store while critiquing a failed effort in Kansas City, Missouri. During a recent discussion, he pointed out that a government grocery store in Kansas City had to close due to ongoing issues such as crime and stock shortages. CNN host Abby Phillip pressed him on the implications of this failure, prompting Mamdani to respond that success in New York’s initiative would depend on the city’s ability to execute it effectively.
Mamdani believes that establishing such stores is a vital part of his progressive agenda, which also includes increasing corporate taxes, offering free public transportation, and implementing rent freezes. He argued that the cost for the five grocery stores he envisions would be around $60 million, which is notably less than what the city has already spent on subsidies for corporate supermarkets.
In August, a local news outlet reported that the Kansas City grocery, known as Sunfresh Market, was closed with a memo explaining its inability to continue serving the community due to unforeseen circumstances. This store, bought by the city in 2016 and opened in 2018 as an attempt to increase local grocery options, had absorbed over $17 million in taxpayer funding during renovations.
Despite these efforts, Sunfresh faced ongoing issues, including empty shelves and crime, leading to a last-ditch attempt by the Kansas City Council to inject $750,000 in emergency funds, which ultimately did not resolve the problems.
Regarding his own plans for New York, Mamdani mentioned that there are over 1,000 grocery stores in the city already but proposes adding one in each district to better serve the diverse population. He argues that groceries should be more affordable and accessible.
Mamdani noted that there’s promising research on the potential for public grocery options in urban settings, citing examples from cities like Chicago as models that could be adapted in New York. He seems to think there’s real potential here, even if the path to success isn’t entirely clear yet.
