Fatal Shooting Incident in Brooklyn
A man was shot and killed in Brooklyn after he attacked a female NYPD officer with a butcher knife, as reported by police.
The incident took place around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday when the man tried to enter the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville through an employee entrance.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, the officer directed him to use the front door. That’s when the man pulled out a large butcher knife and began to assault her, resulting in a slash to her face.
Patrick Hendry, President of the New York City Police Benevolent Association, mentioned to the New York Post that the officer managed to defend herself by blocking the attack with her arm, but she still sustained cuts to her head and ear.
Sources indicated that the assailant seemed intent on slashing her throat during the surprise assault.
As he fled the precinct, another officer attempted to use a Taser on him, leading to a brief chase. The suspect, still holding the knife, charged at officers just two blocks away outside a housing project on Saratoga Avenue.
Officers responded by shooting him multiple times, and he was subsequently taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“She did a tremendous job here tonight,” Hendry remarked. “She could have been killed. This knife was coming directly at her, but she was able to block it off, showcasing incredible skill. Thank goodness she was able to do that; she prevented what could have been a much worse situation.”
“She knew her job was to get this individual off the streets,” he continued. “Even though she was injured, her priority was stopping the threat, and she did that along with her colleagues.”
Chief Rivera also commended the officers for their quick actions in preventing further violence, while expressing concern over the nature of the attack in a police precinct.
“This incident could have turned out very differently,” he noted. “Daily, our officers face dangerous situations, but this is a unique threat when someone comes into a precinct armed with a knife.”
Rivera mentioned that the injured officer is receiving treatment for her injuries at a local hospital and expressed hope for her speedy recovery.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division.
