Increased Immigration Enforcement Expected in Chicago
On September 7, 2025, former Border Patrol chief Tom Homan announced that immigration enforcement operations will likely take place in several sanctuary cities, including Chicago. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to prioritize deportation efforts.
During his appearance on CNN’s “Coalition State,” Homan responded affirmatively when asked about possible enforcement actions in Chicago.
“Absolutely,” he stated. “We can expect action in most sanctuary cities across the country. The president focuses on these areas due to the public safety concerns posed by foreign nationals on a regular basis. That’s the core issue.”
“Sheriffs and police chiefs in Florida collaborate with us, so we’re sending additional resources to the sanctuary cities,” he added.
Homan further criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for opposing federal deportation efforts in Chicago, asserting that state officials had been informed of the federal operations.
“Governor Pritzker has been aware from the start,” Homan remarked. “I initiated these actions right after assuming my role.”
“ICE agents have been active in Chicago for some time, so he knows we are here. We were there just last week,” he noted.
Anchor Jake Tapper inquired about the potential deployment of the Illinois National Guard to Chicago.
“They can amplify our efforts,” Homan replied. “They are an option. Since I started working in government in 1984, all administrations have utilized guards and troops on the border. They’ve proven to be quite helpful.”
Additionally, Homan addressed a recent social media post by President Trump that included images and commentary questioning Chicago’s approach to law enforcement.
Homan described the administration’s stance as a “conflict between criminal organizations and those intent on harming American citizens.”
“You’re absolutely right,” he added.
