Daniel Jones Shines in Colts Opener Against Dolphins

Daniel Jones made an impressive debut for the Indianapolis Colts, leading the team to a dominating 33-8 victory over the Miami Dolphins in the first game of the 2025 NFL season.

He completed 22 passes out of 27 attempts for 272 yards, including a touchdown to Michael Pittman Jr. In addition to his passing game, Jones also recorded two quarterback sneaks for touchdowns, marking his first rushing score since taking on the role of the starting quarterback.

As the season began, both Jones and Anthony Richardson were in contention for the starting role, but head coach Shane Steichen ultimately chose Jones. Steichen’s choice reflected his confidence in Jones, as he seemed willing to give him a longer leash than many expected.

This confidence paid off on Sunday. Jones utilized the Colts’ strong defense to neutralize the Dolphins, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Jones connected with Pittman for a 27-yard touchdown and also scored during a third-and-goal situation early in the second quarter, extending the lead to 20-0 at halftime. The Dolphins, under Mike McDaniel’s offense, struggled to gain any momentum.

As the fourth quarter began, the Colts managed to drain more than nine minutes from the clock with a lengthy drive, culminating in another touchdown for Jones. The impressive 30-0 lead ignited the crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium on a day dedicated to honoring the late owner Jim Irsay.

Later in the game, Tagovailoa managed to find De’Von Achane with an 11-yard swing pass for Miami’s first touchdown of the year, but it was too little, too late for a comeback.

Throughout the match, Jones showcased excellent distribution of the ball, with Pittman leading the receiving corps, catching six passes for 80 yards. Rookie tight end Ty Warren also had a solid outing, recording 77 yards on six receptions during his NFL debut. Running back Jonathan Taylor contributed effectively, adding 71 and 27 rushing yards to the Colts’ offensive efforts.

On the Dolphins’ side, Tagovailoa was under pressure, suffering three sacks for a loss of 114 yards. He finished the day with one touchdown and two interceptions, while Tyreek Hill led the receiving group with four catches for 40 yards.
