The night belonged to the stars.

On Sunday, the 2025 Video Music Awards returned to UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. It was a gathering where some of the most prominent figures in music celebrated in an extravagant way.

Host LL Cool J oversaw the event, which honored winners of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Awards, including Ricky Martin, Tate McRae, Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Busta Rhymes, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Sombr, Steven Tyler, Yungblud, Doja Cat, and Mariah Carey.

Also part of the festivities were Ariana Grande, Lenny Kravitz, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Ciara, and Ice Spice. Taylor Swift, recently engaged to Travis Kelce, had attended last year and was nominated for Artist of the Year but notably did not participate this time around.

Other highlights included Lady Gaga winning Artist of the Year, Ariana Grande snagging Best Pop, Alex Warren taking Best New Artist, and Sabrina Carpenter winning Best Album.

Here are some of the standout moments — both good and bad — from the 2025 VMAs.

Best: Lady Gaga’s Acceptance

Lady Gaga, who skipped the red carpet, shockingly accepted her Artist of the Year Award early. She was gearing up for her “Mayhem Ball” concert at Madison Square Garden later that evening. In her heartfelt speech, she credited the audience for her success and declared her love for performing. Then, without missing a beat, she left to get ready for her next show, proving why she’s such a pro.

Worst: Rose’s Lengthy Speech

When Rose accepted the Song of the Year for “Apt,” her speech felt prolonged — definitely one of those moments where you wonder where the exit music is when you need it. Standing alone on stage and overflowing with gratitude, she seemed to be caught in a moment that just went on…and on.

Best: Ricky Martin’s Showstopper

You could feel the excitement in the air as Ricky Martin delivered a medley celebrating his 40-year career. He performed classics like “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” and “Maria,” captivating the audience completely. Later, he graciously accepted the Latin Icon Award from his friend Jessica Simpson, reflecting on his long journey in music and the importance of bringing people together.

Worst: Mariah Carey’s Underwhelming Performance

Mariah Carey won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award but took a moment to express her frustration to MTV about the wait for her recognition. However, her performance didn’t quite live up to expectations — lacking the energy and choreography that fans anticipated. It left some feeling like she could have brought more to the night.

Best: Ozzy Osbourne Tribute

The awards show honored Ozzy Osbourne with heartfelt tributes from Aerosmith, Yungblud, Stephen Tyler, and Joe Perry. They sang iconic hits like “Crazy Train” amidst a somber yet celebratory atmosphere, especially following Osbourne’s passing in July. The emotional shout-out — “Ozzy Osbourne is forever!” — resonated throughout the venue, marking a poignant moment in the evening.

Worst: The Absence of Taylor Swift

It felt somewhat incomplete without Taylor Swift at the event, especially considering her impressive seven wins the previous year. Her absence was palpable, and it really made one think about the star power she brings. Thankfully, her fans are looking forward to her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” set to release on October 3rd.
