Trump Calls for Housing Act to Secure Homeownership

Former President Donald Trump urged the House to pass the ROAD to 21st Century Housing Act, stating that the act is meant to ensure that housing is for individuals, not corporations.

In a post on Truth Social, he mentioned his concerns expressed during the State of the Union address about the threats to the American dream of homeownership. Trump shared a personal story about his mother, Rachel Wiggins, who had to bid on 20 homes, only to lose them all to large investment firms. He emphasized that such stories highlight the reason behind his executive order prohibiting big Wall Street firms from purchasing single-family homes.

Trump noted how Wiggins “rushed through inspections, paid cash, and still lost to a massive investment company that converted those homes into rentals,” leaving her dreams shattered—a situation that he described as devastating.

“During my speech, I called on Congress to safeguard the American dream of homeownership and to permanently halt these corporate acquisitions,” he continued. “Senators Bernie Moreno and Tim Scott worked diligently to make this a reality, passing the bill in the Senate with nearly 90 votes. I am urging Congress to also pass this act, which guarantees that housing is for people, not corporations.”

A press release from the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee indicated that Senators Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) introduced this legislation, characterizing it as a package that encompasses a significant portion of the Scott-Warren Homes and Highways Act.

Scott and Warren reported that the 21st Century Housing Act, as this package is called, secured unanimous Senate support last fall. The majority of its housing provisions also had Congressional backing and, if passed, it would be the biggest housing legislative effort in decades, including a measure to prohibit large institutional investors from acquiring single-family homes.

Trump’s announcement followed the Senate’s approval of the bill with a vote of 89-10. According to reports, the legislation encourages the building of new homes and launches a program to utilize vacant buildings for housing development.

In a post on X, Scott pointed out how Congress could enact Trump’s policies by moving forward with the ROAD to 21st Century Housing Act, claiming that 2026 could be the year of real affordability.

“Thank you, Mr. President!” Scott expressed. “By supporting this act, Congress will fulfill your vision and make 2026 the year of true affordability. I call on my colleagues in the House to see this through.”

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) also weighed in, stating, “President Trump is absolutely right. The American dream of homeownership is under threat from corporate greed that robs working Americans of their chances.” He also noted in a post on X that Trump had signed an executive order defending against large firms buying single-family homes, a push he championed in the Senate.
