According to a recent report, the Los Angeles Police Department has stopped providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris. The New York Times noted that after President Donald Trump revealed details about Harris’ security in August, officers from the LAPD’s Metropolitan Division had stepped in to ensure her safety.
However, this arrangement came to an end last Saturday, following criticism from the LAPD union, known as the Los Angeles Police Protection League. The union labeled the situation as “nuts” and argued that taxpayers shouldn’t be responsible for such expenses.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, the union’s board expressed their satisfaction that Metro officers, who were assigned to protect Harris, are now focused on their duties in the community.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also weighed in, stating that using LAPD resources for Harris’ protection was only intended as a temporary measure. She expressed gratitude towards the LAPD for their effort in keeping Harris safe and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of all residents in Los Angeles.
Bass’s office has yet to respond to several inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding this matter.
Earlier, Bass had mentioned that Trump’s decision to strip Harris of her security details seemed like a “revenge act,” which raised concerns about her safety.
The LAPD has not commented on multiple inquiries related to the security issue. Meanwhile, sources revealed to the Los Angeles Times that the California Highway Patrol was assigned to manage Harris’ security. Approval from California Governor Gavin Newsom is required for these protective measures.
Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gerdon, stated that their office has not made any comments concerning these security arrangements.
The White House confirmed Trump’s decision to discontinue Harris’ Secret Service protections, which generally last for six months following inauguration. However, former President Joe Biden had signed an order extending her security for an additional year.
CNN first reported that Trump signed a memo outlining the adjustments to Harris’ security. A spokesperson for Harris indicated that there was no justification for revoking her protection.
In other news, the U.S. Secret Service did not respond to requests for comment. Additionally, reports surfaced earlier this year about Harris’ husband retracting details of his own security as well. As outlined on the Secret Service website, former presidents and their spouses are entitled to security for life unless they choose to opt out.
