Meta overlooked alerts regarding chatbots and children, says Senate Democrat

Senator Markey Raises Concerns Over Meta’s AI Chatbots

Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) sent a letter on Monday accusing Meta of neglecting his concerns regarding the accessibility of AI chatbots for minors. He urged the tech giant to restrict such access on its platform.

In his letter, Markey expressed shock over a recent report discussing Meta’s AI chatbot standards and the lack of substantial evidence supporting their safety for younger audiences. He highlighted the urgent need to prevent minors from engaging with these AI chatbots.

Markey mentioned that he initially reached out to Meta about this issue in 2023, warning that the company was hastily pushing out its “premature products” without fully considering the potential risks for young users. Unfortunately, he feels that Meta’s actions over the past two years have validated his concerns.

Both Republican and Democratic senators have drawn attention to the controversial content surrounding chatbots, particularly following revelations about conversations that could be deemed “sensual” or inappropriate for children. This issue has reignited discussions about child safety in technology.

According to a report from Reuters, an internal policy document from Meta provided examples of acceptable dialogue between AI chatbots and children, revealing that these chatbots could engage in “romantic or sensual conversations.” Markey noted that this was alarming and called it “compelling evidence” of the problem.

Surprisingly, he stated that Meta’s legal, public policy, and engineering staff, including its legal ethicists, had reviewed and approved the document. Although Meta later claimed it was a mistake for this content to be included, Markey remarked that the situation remains both baffling and unacceptable.

Amid these revelations, Meta has announced plans to revise its policies concerning interactions with minors. The company is working to train its AI to avoid discussions about self-harm, suicide, or inappropriate romantic conversations and will instead guide users to expert resources.

Markey is also seeking answers from Meta by the end of the month regarding its plans for collecting data from younger chatbot users and how that data will be utilized.
