Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles criticized for insensitive remark about the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska

Charlotte Mayor’s Controversial Comments on Ukrainian Refugee Shooting

The Mayor of Charlotte, Vi Lyles, is receiving backlash for her remarks extending compassion toward the individual implicated in the tragic murder of Ukrainian refugees on a city train last month.

“This is a heartbreaking situation that highlights the shortcomings of our social safety net and the systems surrounding mental health care,” Lyles expressed in a statement to a reporter.

Democratic leaders noted that the presumed assailant, DeCarlos Brown Jr., “seems to be in crisis.”

Amidst the unfolding tragedy, Lyles further asserted that Brown, responsible for taking an innocent life, deserves the same level of “sympathy, effort, and dedication” afforded to individuals battling other serious health issues.

She characterized the Charlotte Regional Transport System (CATS), where the fatal incident took place, as “mostly a safe transportation option,” despite the brutal stabbing that occurred as Irina Zarutska was returning home from work.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect preparing for the attack while using his phone and wearing earphones, seemingly oblivious to his surroundings.

“We must continue addressing issues like homelessness and mental health,” she remarked, emphasizing the need for ongoing discourse.

Interestingly, Lyles did not address Brown’s criminal history, even in light of his actions against Zarutska.

She concluded her comments by stressing her commitment to helping community members who are in distress and lack support.

Requests for further commentary from the mayor’s office went unanswered.
