Nithya Raman, a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, has ties to an online group that critics accuse of fostering anti-Semitic sentiments against Israel.
Raman has been active in sharing posts from an Instagram account, Dear White Staff, which gained popularity for airing workplace complaints from Capitol Hill. However, the account has faced scrutiny since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to a shift in its political messaging.
This shift has caught the attention of many, particularly in Washington.
Raman’s online activism has recently been scrutinized more closely as her campaign encounters various controversies and notable incidents.
It’s observed that the account gained traction in 2022 for revealing often unverified information about Congressional members and their offices.
Despite its rapid growth to nearly 120,000 followers, its founder has largely remained anonymous.
In the wake of recent events, critics argue the account has transformed significantly since October 7, moving away from its original focus to instead promote anti-Israel rhetoric, including accusations of genocide in Gaza and criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel.
The account has directed its messages towards Jewish lawmakers, making contentious claims about Israeli police activities and responses at the Capitol.
Reportedly, the group also played a role in organizing protests against Israel, even engaging members of Congress to encourage Democratic voters to reconsider their support for President Biden regarding his policies on Israel.
Other left-leaning figures in Los Angeles, like City Council member Eunice Hernandez and fellow mayoral candidate Lei Chen Huang, have also shown support for the account.
This latest controversy comes amid an already challenging phase for Raman’s campaign, which has faced backlash for her responses in interviews, described by some as incoherent, alongside criticism regarding her comments on policing and a proposed ban on backyard barbecues during high fire danger periods.
The campaign has sought comments from the Dear White Staff account, Raman, Huang, and Hernandez.
The primary election in Los Angeles is slated for June 2nd.
