Rangers help hikers with mushroom issues who got lost in the Catskills of New York

Rescue of Hikers After Psychedelic Incident in Catskill Mountains

Four hikers in the Catskill Mountains of New York, who reported taking psychedelic mushrooms, found themselves disoriented off the trail and needed rescuing. This incident marks the second such occurrence in New York’s popular hiking areas this year.

According to the Group Environmental Protection Agency, the hikers called for assistance around 5 p.m. on August 29 due to feeling “high debilitating.” They were located by a Forest Ranger and the Pine Hill Fire Department approximately 1,000 feet from the designated trail around 6:45 p.m.

These four men, all in their 20s, were in a precarious state—one was curled up in a fetal position and unable to communicate. Forest Ranger Russell Martin mentioned the hikers were experiencing hallucinations and mistaking their surroundings, even imagining a nonexistent bridge.

Psychedelic mushrooms, often referred to as “magic mushrooms,” contain psilocybin, a substance known to cause significant changes in perception and emotional state. It’s noteworthy that these mushrooms are illegal in New York.

Martin warned about the dangers of the Catskill terrain, stating, “This is a steep area where poor decisions can have serious consequences.” He further recommended that if individuals choose to partake in substances like mushrooms, they should ideally be with someone who isn’t using.

The hikers were found in the Slide Mountain wilderness area, around 80 miles southwest of Albany, which is a sought-after destination for its viewing spots of Panther and Slide Mountain from rugged rock outcrops. The area rises to about 3,200 feet, and the hikers had ascended roughly 1,200 feet from the trailhead.

Officials later reported that none of the men required hospitalization, and they were escorted back to the trailhead for evaluation. However, during the ordeal, one hiker misplaced his car keys, which were found the following day along with a sling bag hidden beneath a log.

Earlier this year in May, a different hiking group in the Adirondack Mountains, near Lake Placid, contacted authorities when one of their members was believed to be deceased after ingesting similar mushrooms. Thankfully, that individual was assessed to be unharmed.

It’s a stark reminder of the hazards that can accompany outdoor adventures, particularly when substances are involved.
