Texas Powerball Winners to Share a Historic Prize
It’s official: Powerball winnings are on the rise in Texas. Two fortunate players, one from Missouri and another from Texas, are set to split an impressive $1.78 billion jackpot following Saturday’s draw. It’s quite likely that the Texas winner will walk away with millions after taxes.
This recent payout marks the second-largest in Powerball’s 33-year history, and it’s being split between the lucky winners. What makes it even sweeter for the Texas player is the state’s absence of income tax, meaning they’ll take home a significantly larger portion of the prize.
Nevertheless, winners are still subject to federal taxes that can take a hefty slice—around 37%. After all deductions, they might end up with a net payout of about $258.5 million. Interestingly, Missouri, where the other winner resides, has a 4% state tax, which could cost them around $16.4 million compared to their Texan counterpart.
This draw finally yielded a jackpot winner after a long dry spell since May, and it’s been remarkable. In fact, over that period, there were 101 winning tickets that earned over $1 million, and more than 1,000 tickets that won at least $1,000.
As for identifying the jackpot winners, it’s possible we may never know who they are. Both Texas and Missouri law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous, creating a bit of a mystery. Missouri’s law, passed in 2021, makes it illegal to disclose personal info, while Texas has a similar law enacted in 2017 for prizes over $1 million.
But we do know where at least one winning ticket was sold. It was purchased at Big 103, a gas station in Fredericksburg, about 70 miles south of San Antonio. Store manager Melanie Carter mentioned they “never expected” to sell a winning ticket, especially since they just opened in 2021. There’s a hope that it went to a local who could really use the money, especially with flood recovery ongoing in the area.
According to the Texas lottery, the store is also in line to receive a bonus of up to $250,000 for selling a winning ticket. In Missouri, the actual location of the other winning ticket will be revealed within 72 hours after the draw—people are eager for those details.
Winners have to make a choice between a lump sum of roughly $410 million or a staggering total prize of $893.5 million paid in 30 installments over 29 years. Comparatively, the largest payout in history was a jaw-dropping $2.04 billion awarded to players in California back in November 2022.
The drawn numbers for Saturday were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and the Powerball was 17. What a remarkable evening for some lucky players!
