Tragic Death of Ukrainian Refugee in North Carolina
Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee from Ukraine, sought safety in the United States but was tragically murdered on a train in North Carolina. She had fled her war-torn country, only to meet a violent fate here.
Born on May 22, 2002, Iryna was the daughter of Anna Salzka and Stanislav Saltosky. Friends remember her as a dedicated artist with a strong passion for animals, aspiring to be a veterinary assistant. Before relocating, she completed her education at Synergy College in Kyiv, focusing on arts and restoration. Her obituary highlights how she used her talents to create meaningful art for those she cherished.
In the touching tribute, it was noted, “Irina is remembered for her kindness, creativity, and the lasting impressions she left on everyone she met. Her absence creates a profound void, but her spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who loved her.”
Community Reactions to the Violence
After the tragic event on August 22, the local community expressed their grief. Irina’s family moved to the U.S. in August 2022 to escape Ukraine’s ongoing conflict, and she quickly adapted to her new life, even becoming fluent in English. A family friend, Ronnie, shared, “She was always very kind, very supportive, and had a golden heart. It’s really hard to process that she’s gone.”
On that fateful day, Iryna was returning home from her job at Zepedi’s pizzeria, still in uniform, when she was approached by a man in a red hoodie who unexpectedly attacked her with a knife. The assailant, later identified as DeCarlos Brown, has since been arrested and charged with murder.
Outpouring of Grief from the Community
Zepedi’s Pizzeria released a heartfelt statement, describing her death as a “big loss.” They said, “We not only lost an incredible employee but a true friend. Irina left this world too soon. As we navigate this tragedy, we ask for your understanding and respect for our team as we seek peace… Irina, you will remain in our hearts forever.” They also lit candles in her memory, reflecting the warmth and kindness she brought into their lives.
Suspect’s Criminal History
DeCarlos Brown has been charged with first-degree murder under a Mecklenburg County arrest warrant. Investigations revealed that he and Iryna did not know each other, indicating the attack was random. Brown has a long history of legal troubles, including past convictions for theft and burglary. He was incarcerated until 2020 and was on parole until 2021, with additional accusations arising earlier this year.
