Florida Player Apologizes for Spitting Incident
Brendan Bett, a defensive lineman for Florida, issued an apology on Monday after a spitting incident involving USF offensive lineman Cole Skinner during Saturday’s game.
In his Instagram post, Bett expressed, “I would like to sincerely apologize for my actions at the game last Saturday. I disappointed my teammates, coaches, family, and Gator Nation. The coaches have always stressed the importance of sportsmanship, and I crossed the line. I also want to apologize to the South Florida team.”
During the fourth quarter, Bett stepped up, confronted Skinner, and spat in his face before turning away, only to be pushed back by Skinner in response.
As a result of his actions, Bett was penalized and ejected from the game, a decision that ultimately cost the Gators. In the following play, USF’s quarterback Bylam Brown threw a 29-yard pass to Albon Isaac, advancing to Florida’s 32-yard line. This allowed Nico Gramatica to kick a 20-yard field goal, leading to a surprising 18-16 victory over the No. 13 Gators.
Florida’s coach Billy Napier spoke to reporters on Monday, stating that Bett would face “internal discipline” but did not clarify whether that would affect his availability for Saturday’s game against LSU. He also reflected on Bett’s behavior, saying, “It was out of character for him. He made mistakes that compromised the team, showing selfishness and misrepresenting our fans, alumni, and university.”
Bett, a redshirt sophomore who transferred to Florida from Baylor, reiterated his remorse: “To Cole Skinner #56, there are no excuses for my actions. I am truly sorry for you and your family. My actions don’t reflect the way I was raised.”
This incident marked the second spitting event in just a few days, following a similar incident where Star Eagles defender Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
