Mamdani holds commanding lead in NYC race: Poll

New York City Mayoral Race Update

Zoran Mamdani, a candidate in the New York City mayoral race, currently leads the field despite a narrowing advantage in major matchups, as revealed by a recent poll.

According to a New York Times/Siena University survey, Mamdani maintains over a 20-point lead, standing at 24% compared to former governor Andrew Cuomo’s (D) support, which is slightly over 20%. In third place is Republican Curtis Sliwa with 15%, while current mayor Eric Adams (D) trails at 9%.

Both Cuomo and Adams have opted for independent campaigns. Cuomo launched his bid after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, who is part of the New York State Legislature. Meanwhile, Adams has chosen to exit the primary altogether.

The poll also revealed that about 5% of respondents remained unsure of their preferred candidate.

Last week, speculation arose regarding Adams potentially having a role in the Trump administration. Reports indicated discussions among those close to Trump about including Adams and Sliwa, which might benefit Cuomo by drawing votes away from Mamdani.

In response to this speculation, both Adams and Sliwa quickly stated they would not take positions under Trump, with Adams reaffirming his commitment to the campaign. He also expressed a sense of optimism, suggesting that polling may have underestimated both him and Mamdani during earlier rounds.

Mamdani accused Cuomo of being Trump’s favored candidate; however, Cuomo dismissed this notion, suggesting instead that Trump would prefer to defeat Mamdani.

If the candidate field shrinks, Mamdani is likely to maintain a lead, although the margin might become tighter. The closest matchup seems to be between him and Cuomo, who consistently places second in polls.

Mamdani’s support appears robust, with one poll showing him at 48%, in a close race with Cuomo at 44%, while 3% of respondents indicated they would not vote. When considering just Adams, Mamdani leads by a similar margin, at 55% to Adams’s 36%.

Cuomo has argued that he is the most viable candidate to challenge Mamdani and believes other candidates should consolidate their support behind him to counter what he sees as a democratic socialist threat. Sliwa and Adams, however, seem unlikely to exit the race, potentially splitting the vote among those opposing Mamdani.

The polling results indicate that Mamdani enjoys a favorable image, with 52% of respondents viewing him positively, while 39% viewed him negatively. On the other hand, Cuomo’s favorability is significantly lower, trailing by more than 20 points, while Adams is at nearly a 40-point deficit. Sliwa also faces a considerable drop in favorability.

This data suggests a potential avenue for Mamdani’s opponents, particularly if they consolidate behind a single candidate, possibly Cuomo. Yet, maintaining a static race in the coming two months could pose a significant challenge.

The Times/Siena poll was conducted from September 2 to 6, surveying 1,284 New York City voters, with a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points.
