Rivian Reveals Job Cuts After Tax Credits End

Rivian Initiates Layoffs Amid EV Tax Credit Uncertainty

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer based in Irvine, California, recently announced plans to lay off around 200 employees, which is about 1.5% of its workforce of roughly 15,000. This decision comes as the company prepares for the expiration of the federal EV tax credit at the end of the month, a situation that is likely to impact demand for electric vehicles across the board.

Under the previous administration’s legislation, the $7,500 credit for new electric vehicles—and up to $4,000 for used ones—are expected to be phased out. This change could undermine efforts to encourage consumers to transition from traditional gas vehicles. Many automakers, including General Motors and Volkswagen, are already responding to anticipated drops in consumer interest by cutting jobs and slowing production.

Previously, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe made a striking comparison, likening the decision to buy a gas-powered car to “building a horse barn in 1910.” In 2023 alone, Rivian faced substantial financial losses, reportedly losing $33,000 on each electric truck sold.

The average selling price for Rivian vehicles exceeds $80,000, yet the company has yet to turn a profit. The losses were particularly stark in the second quarter. Scaringe emphasized the challenge of creating a superior product while operating on a limited budget, which he feels hampers the company’s mission.

Rivian’s narrative blends rapid financial achievements with operational hurdles. After its IPO in 2021, where it raised nearly $12 billion, Rivian briefly outshone many established auto manufacturers. However, operationally, the company is struggling, having depleted half of its $18 billion cash reserve over two years while operating at less than a third of its production capacity. Launching three models at once adds to the complexity of its manufacturing dynamics.
