Life in France for Debra and Eric

Debra and Eric Stillwell, a couple in their sixties, left California five years ago. Now, they’re enjoying a more laid-back lifestyle in the Dordogne Valley, France.

Eric, who once worked as a script coordinator for Star Trek and held positions at Disney, found that retirement in Los Angeles was financially challenging. However, moving to France allowed them the freedom to enjoy life earlier than anticipated.

They were inspired by Debra’s mother, who had retired early and claimed it was the best choice she’d ever made. This dream of living in Europe, which began at a Star Trek convention back in 1995, became a reality for them.

The lifestyle they lead now starkly contrasts with their previous circumstances in Los Angeles, where debt and mortgages made early retirement a distant dream. Debra noted that if they had remained in the U.S., they would likely be working for many more years.

In France, their cost of living—utilities, food, and travel—is significantly lower, which, combined with rich cultural experiences, enhances their quality of life.

“When we were in Los Angeles, even with early retirement, we struggled to pay off our mortgage and debts,” Eric, now 62, revealed.

Health considerations also played a major role in their decision, especially as both have diabetes. Medical expenses were a serious concern.

“Back then, health insurance would have cost over $500 a month. I can only imagine it’s more today,” Debra shared.

“I realized that if we had stayed, I’d probably be working until I was 85,” the 67-year-old added.

These days, they often stroll down Maruishi Street, visit local markets, or explore nearby castles. Occasionally, they make trips to Bordeaux to admire Debra’s favorite museum, the Cite de la Vin.

Debra learned French while living in Montreal, and Eric has French heritage through his great-grandfather. Initially, they considered moving to Italy, but a wine cruise to Bordeaux in 2013 changed their minds.

During an overnight stay in Saint Emilion, they fell in love with the Dordogne region. At that point, Debra had just retired from her role as a medical center education director, and Eric was transitioning from Disney.

Relocating to France

The couple sold their home in California, paid off all their debts, and then bought a cozy chalet in the Residence Souirak Golf & Country Club in Dordogne for about 70,000 euros.

Currently, they reside in France on a long-term visa that they renew each year. Although Debra considered applying for citizenship, new regulations inhibit retirees with foreign income from doing so.

“People assume all Americans in France are wealthy, but that’s not the case. Our home cost 70,000 euros; we’re not rich,” Eric pointed out.
