FBI Charges Suspect in North Carolina Train Stabbing
The FBI announced on Tuesday that Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. has been charged in connection to the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a train in North Carolina. The charge pertains to actions that resulted in death within a mass transit system.
“The brutal attack on Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte Light Rail is an act of violence that has no place in America,” stated FBI Director Kash Patel. He stressed the bureau’s commitment to swiftly supporting the investigation to ensure justice is served, thanking the Attorney General, who played a role in pursuing federal charges. “This is a pivotal step toward obtaining justice for Iryna and her family,” he added.
Attorney General Bondi indicated that the Justice Department is seeking the harshest penalty for Brown, citing that the incident on August 22 was emblematic of lenient criminal policies that endanger innocent people. “I oversee the federal prosecution of Decarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender, and we are demanding the maximum sentence for this despicable act of violence,” she remarked, asserting that he should remain incarcerated indefinitely.
James C. Barnacle Jr., a special agent with the FBI in Charlotte, expressed hope that the federal charges would contribute to bringing justice to Zarutska’s family. “Iryna was likely a familiar face on that train, probably returning home after work. Tragically, that didn’t happen for her,” he said. “It’s imperative that everyone can travel without fear of violence.”
Brown’s Criminal History
Brown faces state charges of first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Zarutska, 23, who died on the light rail train in Charlotte. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Brown extracting a folding knife and stabbing her multiple times.
Brown’s criminal background paints a troubling picture. He had been arrested 14 times prior and had convictions related to theft and robbery, serving over six years in prison. Despite being released in 2020, he faced new charges earlier this year for making threats and misusing emergency services.
The incident has drawn significant attention, with President Trump labeling Brown a “madman.” The tragedy has prompted discussions around stricter crime policies and greater federal oversight in violent cases.
Iryna Zarutska, who had fled to the U.S. to escape the war in Ukraine, had just started working at a local pizzeria at the time of her death. Family members remembered her as a talented artist with a passion for life and a love for animals.
