Evacuation Order in Gaza City Ahead of Ground Offensive

The Israeli military has issued a complete evacuation order for Gaza City, which is set to precede a ground offensive intended to take control of the area, viewed by Israel as Hamas’ main base.

This directive has apparently caused widespread panic among the city’s roughly one million residents, many of whom are already grappling with severe humanitarian issues.

The situation escalated after a Palestinian gunman opened fire at a busy bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem, leaving six dead and injuring a dozen more. The attacker was ultimately shot by an off-duty soldier and a civilian.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military urged all those in Gaza City to evacuate immediately, directing them south toward the al-Mawasi area, identified as a humanitarian zone. This marks the first order for a full evacuation in the ongoing conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that this operation is crucial for eradicating Hamas and for the release of hostages still held by the group.

In a statement, Netanyahu asserted, “Our goal is not to occupy Gaza; our goal is to free Gaza,” reiterating that Hamas continues to present a significant threat to Israel.

Israel’s military goals include dismantling Hamas’s military and governance structures and securing the release of hostages. Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned of a “mighty hurricane” if Hamas does not release the captives and surrender.

Conversely, some critics argue that the evacuation order worsens the severe humanitarian crisis. They contend that many residents cannot escape due to transportation costs and a lack of appropriate shelter in the south.

On the international front, nations like Germany and Spain have suspended arms shipments to Israel, accusing it of violating international law. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that relying solely on military means isn’t supportable. He proposed diplomatic engagement, even as Hamas fails to meet key Israeli demands. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned Israel for “exterminating a defenseless people” while reaffirming Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.

Supporters of Israel assert that Netanyahu’s evacuation warnings reflect a level of consideration, noting that leaders typically do not alert the populations that back their adversaries during wartime.
