Polish military officials reported that their airspace was intruded upon multiple times by drone-like objects during recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, prompting military operations to address the situation.
In an early Wednesday statement, they said, “During today’s Russian Federation assault on targets in Ukrainian territory, there were repeated incursions into our airspace by drone-type objects.”
The statement further noted, “An operation is currently underway to identify and neutralize these objects.” It added that, at the direction of the Polish Army’s operational commander, forces have been deployed to locate any downed objects.
Citizens were advised to remain indoors as military operations progressed.
“We want to stress that these military actions are ongoing and urge the public to stay home. The most at-risk areas include Podrasky, Mazowiekki, and Rubersky’s region. The Polish military continues to monitor the situation closely, and all resources are prepared for immediate action.”
Earlier communications indicated that Polish forces had taken “all necessary measures” in light of ongoing “massive attacks” on Ukraine.
“Polish and allied aircraft are active in our airspace, and our ground air defense systems are at optimal readiness,” a previous statement noted.
Local sources reported that Warsaw’s main airport was briefly closed due to sightings of Russian drones in Polish airspace.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed via social media that “discussions regarding various airspace violations are in progress.”
“The military has engaged targets. I am in constant communication with the President and the Defense Minister. I’ve received direct updates from the operational commander,” he added.
This situation has sparked concerns regarding a potential Russian incursion into NATO territory.
Representative Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), a member of both the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees, labeled the drone activity as “an act of war,” urging President Trump to respond with sanctions.
“Russia is attacking our NATO ally Poland using Iranian drones, and this comes just a week after President Trump hosted President Now Rocky at the White House,” he stated on a social platform. “This is indeed an act of war, and we appreciate our NATO allies for their swift reaction to Putin’s ongoing assaults on a free nation.”
“I call upon President Trump to impose sanctions that would severely impact the Russian military and support for Ukraine.”
Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) remarked that the event cannot be overlooked.
“Recurring violations of NATO airspace by Russian drones send a clear signal that Vladimir Putin is testing NATO’s commitment to defend Poland and the Baltic states. These intrusions must not be ignored, especially given the ongoing atrocities Putin is committing in Ukraine.”
