NFL Kicker Jake Moody Released by 49ers After Poor Performance

Jake Moody, the kicker for the San Francisco 49ers, faced a challenging situation despite the team’s narrow win against the Seattle Seahawks in their season opener.

On Tuesday, the 49ers decided to part ways with Moody following an underwhelming performance. While he successfully completed three kicks during the game, all were relatively short, with his longest being from 32 yards. Notably, he missed a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter and had a 36-yard attempt blocked later in the game.

The 49ers won the match 17-13, but it’s fair to say they might have had a more comfortable lead had the kicking game been stronger.

Initially, head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed supportive of Moody, expressing confidence after the game. However, by Tuesday, that sentiment appeared to waver. He mentioned, “I’m evaluating things; just ask me every day.” This, perhaps, signaled a shift in how the team was approaching their special teams strategy.

Reports suggest that the 49ers plan to sign Eddie Matsuda as Moody’s replacement.

Moody joined the 49ers in 2023 after being picked in the third round of the draft from Michigan State. He had previously made a significant impact, even setting a record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history at 55 yards, although that record was later surpassed in the same game.

It’s just one of those situations in sports where performance really dictates decisions, doesn’t it? Fans will undoubtedly be curious to see how this unfolds for both Moody and the 49ers moving forward.
