Prince Harry Reunites with King Charles After 18 Months
Prince Harry met with King Charles III for the first time in a year and a half. The Duke of Sussex was spotted driving to Clarence House, the King’s London residence, on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old prince had returned to the UK on September 8. His visit aimed to support various causes and charities, as well as to honor the memory of his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the third anniversary of her passing. He visited her grave in Windsor and laid down flowers.
Sources have revealed that Harry’s relationship with his family, especially with his father, has been strained. After Charles was diagnosed with a private cancer in February 2024, he reportedly stopped responding to Harry’s calls or letters. Royal commentators have mentioned that there’s been a significant rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William.
Earlier this year, Harry expressed a desire to mend family ties. He shared with the BBC, “I hope to reconcile with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore. I don’t know how long my dad has.”
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, distanced themselves from the royal family back in 2020 and relocated to California. Since then, they have voiced their grievances through various interviews and documentaries. His memoir, “Spare,” revealed sensitive details about family dynamics and rivalry, further complicating relationships.
In July, it was reported that Harry had subtly offered to share his official engagement schedule as a peace gesture. This seemed to be aimed at easing tensions with the King. Additionally, a meeting took place between Harry’s aide and London’s Secretary of Communications, but responses from Buckingham Palace and the Sussexes were not provided at the time.
Interestingly, officials from Prince William’s circle were noticeably absent from what some referred to as a “peace summit.” This has led to speculation that William, upset with Harry, may not want their father to facilitate contact.
The two brothers last appeared together in August 2024 at the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellows, but maintained their distance then too.
Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner remarked on the current situation, mentioning that King Charles feels a Christian responsibility to welcome Harry, Meghan, and their children back into the family fold. He added that he believes the King is steadfast in his decisions regarding the monarchy’s future, despite past claims concerning Meghan that may have raised concerns.
