Who was Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist killed at a UVU event?

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative figure, was tragically shot at Utah Valley University’s City Hall on Wednesday.

At just 31, Kirk had made quite a name for himself as the CEO of Turning Point USA and gained popularity on platforms like YouTube and X, known for his unapologetic conservative views.

Turning Point USA saw a staggering increase in revenue, rising from $4.3 million in 2016 to about $92.4 million in 2023. The organization, which has a presence on over 3,500 campuses across the country, claims more than 250,000 student members.

Kirk’s Background

Kirk was raised in Arlington Heights, a Chicago suburb. His mother worked as a mental health counselor, and his father owned a construction business.

Interestingly, Kirk’s early activism started in high school. He once wrote an essay for Breitbart News criticizing the liberal bias he perceived in school textbooks. Remarkably, during the same period, he also organized a successful boycott against a cafeteria cookie price hike.

After studying for a while at Harper College, Kirk left before finishing his degree.

Living in the Spotlight

On the day of the shooting, Kirk was hosting an event for his American comeback tour, aiming to provoke discussion among college students. Witnesses reported that he had just been addressing topics related to politics and current events before the attack occurred.

Kirk was married to Erica Franzbe, a former Miss Arizona USA, and together they had two young children. Franzbe is a model and has a background in both sports and academics, having played NCAA women’s basketball.

In terms of his influence, Kirk had gathered a significant following, sharing his views and engaging in debates on various issues like politics and social topics with students nationwide.

Relationship with Trump

Since the 2016 election, Kirk had formed a close bond with former President Trump, who openly praised him. In fact, Trump had referred to him as a “Warrior of Light” and considered him a major voice among the youth. On social media, Trump expressed his condolences upon hearing the news of Kirk’s death.

The attack during his speaking event has left many in shock and grieving, highlighting not just the loss of a prominent figure, but the underlying tensions surrounding political discourse.
