Jets offense's 394-yard performance in Week 1 marks the beginning of a pursuit for excellence

Jets Aim for Improvement After Week 1

The Jets showcased an impressive 394 yards in their season opener, marking the sixth-highest output in the NFL during Justin Fields’ debut. Despite falling short against the Steelers, this performance stands out compared to last season when the team ranked 24th in total yards.

With Aaron Rodgers now focusing on the offense, the Jets must prepare to face a challenging Bills team this Sunday.

“We’re always ready to put up points, but our aim is to score more than they do,” Fields mentioned after practice at Flowham Park on Wednesday. “Is that tough to follow? Maybe. Honestly, I’m not sure how to answer that. We just want to keep improving.”

Fields believes that the season-opening game, despite the loss, sets a foundation for what they hope to achieve moving forward. “If we play this way, maybe that was the worst we’ll perform all season,” he said. “That’s how we should think about it.”

This game marked the first for head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, with the Jets rushing for 182 yards against Pittsburgh, more than teams like the Ravens and Jaguars.

Fields contributed with two rushing touchdowns, while Brean Allen added another, and Brace Hall led the team with 107 rushing yards on 19 carries.

“There’s definitely room for improvement,” Fields expressed. “We know we make mistakes. We strive for perfection, but we’re realistic about it.”

Glenn echoed this sentiment during a press conference, focusing on the need to build consistency rather than dwell on the past game. “We can’t accept 32 points allowed. We have to think about how to move forward,” he noted.

He emphasized a collective team effort is essential. “It’s not just on the offense; everyone contributes to making things happen,” he added.

Glenn also highlighted the desire for consistency throughout the team, acknowledging the challenges of facing tough defenses.

On the defensive front, the Jets allowed four touchdown passes from Rodgers, and a pivotal fumble by former kickoff returner Xavier Gipson in the fourth quarter proved costly.

Still, the offensive line impressed, allowing only one sack during the opener. Glenn praised rookie tackle Armand Membou for his dedication and effort. “He’s committed to becoming a great player. You can see it in his work ethic, both on the field and with his teammates,” he said.

Glenn’s optimism is clear, expressing excitement about Membou’s potential for the season ahead.
