Expansion of Women’s Basketball League
CHICAGO – Just two days after announcing an impressive $340 million rating, the women’s 3-for-3 basketball league shared on Wednesday that it will be expanding.
They’ve added two new teams, Breeze BC and Hive BC, raising the total to eight for this second season.
This means there are now 12 additional roster spots for players, bringing the overall participant count to 48.
Moreover, the league has introduced an in-season development pool featuring six players.
This expansion seems to open the door for an exciting fourth game, with changes likely shaking up the current dynamics.
Luke Cooper, president of the league, mentioned that this expansion is happening a year ahead of schedule.
Founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, the league aims to offer players a chance to play during the WNBA offseason.
Last season, it had the highest average salary ever seen in professional women’s sports leagues and gained recognition for its supportive player environment, resources, and facilities.
This update follows a recent Series B investment round.
Interestingly, Unralied expressed interest in a partnership with the WNBA, but that interest may not be mutual.
Dialogged President Alex Butzel stated to Front Office Sports that they hoped to establish a partnership akin to that of the TGL (Tomorrow’s Golf League) and the PGA, believing that many investors in this new league want ongoing engagement with women’s basketball.
He hinted, though, that there might have been a lack of enthusiasm from the WNBA’s side.
In an earlier conversation with Sports Illustrated, Butzel emphasized they don’t intend to be a “thorn” in the WNBA’s side. Instead, he sees both entities as working toward the same goal of growing women’s basketball, suggesting a partnership could be beneficial for both.
Butzel mentioned that their league complements the WNBA nicely, even requesting that their calendar intertwine with WNBA’s schedule.
