He Felt Like a Younger Sibling to Me

Donald Trump Jr. shared a heartfelt statement on Wednesday in response to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his close friend, emphasizing Kirk’s bravery, his strong family values, his commitment, and his lasting influence on young people and American politics.

“I’m not great with words, but I’m really struggling to express how I feel about Charlie’s assassination. He was more than just a friend; he was like a younger brother to me and a true inspiration,” Trump Jr. stated. “He lived purposefully every single day. His faith was unwavering, his love for Erica was truly inspiring, and the way he cared for his two wonderful kids showed the kind of person he was.”

Trump Jr. noted Kirk’s significant impact on youth, praising his courage to engage and inspire others and his fight for freedom—something he found immeasurable.

He characterized Kirk as “no threat to anyone.” “He was civil, kind, listened well, and showed respect,” Trump Jr. remarked. “The only ‘threat’ he posed was his incredible effectiveness. He was a powerful voice for the truth, and that made him a target.”

“This is an absolutely heartbreaking loss. Not just for Erica and their children, but for the entire nation. We’ve lost a leader, a fighter, and someone whose character and beliefs are rare in today’s world,” he said, adding that Kirk’s legacy would remain alive due to its foundation in faith, truth, and courage. “We can honor him by loving boldly, speaking truth without fear, and embodying his courageous spirit.”

Reflecting on life’s fragility, Trump Jr. remarked, “We should express to people how much they mean to us while we still can. We can’t keep our admiration silent. Charlie knew he was loved, but I want to reiterate—he was my brother. This is a loss that’s hard to comprehend. For me, for his family, for all who cherished him, and for America, rest in peace. Your impact is beyond words, but your legacy will forever inspire the good fight.”

Kirk, who was 31, was fatally shot during a Q&A at Utah Valley University. President Donald Trump commented on Truth Social, stating, “No one understood or connected with the youth of America better than Charlie.” He also ordered flags in the U.S. to be flown at half-mast until Sunday evening.

The assassination prompted reactions from leaders both nationally and internationally. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to Kirk as “a friend of Israel” who was slain for his commitment to truth and freedom. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed sadness, labeling Kirk as “a brave advocate for free speech,” also drawing parallels to his family’s own history of political assassinations.

Kirk’s death followed earlier warnings he shared this year regarding what he termed “assassination culture” on the political left. In an April post on X, he referenced studies showing a growing acceptance of political violence, cautioning that “the left is being fueled by a violent frenzy.”
