Experts in royalty suggest that when Meghan Markle entered the royal family, she envisioned a life as “slim and fun,” akin to a Disney princess. British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard mentioned that Markle probably thought marrying Prince Harry would bring a sparkling, joyous lifestyle, yet it appears she’s a person who craves being in the spotlight and doing things her way.
Grant Harold, a former royal butler for King Charles from 2004 to 2011, recently shared insights in his book, “The Royal Butler.” He mentioned an instance where Markle opted to host a lunch for friends on a day she had royal obligations. Harold pointed out that while she thought it was permissible, it really wasn’t, especially considering the royals’ schedules are often planned months in advance.
Harold expressed that Markle likely imagined her role in the royal family would mirror the glamorous portrayals of Disney princesses. However, he noted that reality comes with a set of rules and protocols that one must adhere to.
Chard believes Prince Harry probably informed Markle about the challenges of being a princess, yet she seemed to be drawn more to the fantasy aspect of the role. He noted that it became apparent this wasn’t necessarily what she desired, leading them to break away from royal life and seek a different, brighter path following their marriage in 2018 and subsequent decision to step down as Senior Royals in 2020.
According to royals expert Hilary Fordwich, the monarchy was seeking more recognition for its commitment to duty, but Markle seemed more intrigued by the allure, glamour, and public image that comes with royal life.
Recently, Harry met with King Charles for the first time in over a year. Chard remarked that King Charles still loves his son, yet noted that Prince William harbors mistrust towards Harry.
Chard elaborated on the drama surrounding Harry, mentioning that it often seems there’s not enough accountability or acknowledgment of the tensions resulting from his actions, implying that for him, there would be a difficult journey ahead. In her view, meaningful apologies seem to be lacking, particularly on Harry’s part, and she believes he needs to put in more effort to mend those ties.
