Shooting Incident at Evergreen High School
In Denver, a tragic event unfolded at Evergreen High School on Wednesday, where the suspected shooter died from self-inflicted injuries at a hospital. Two students sustained injuries during the incident, as reported by local officials.
Due to the shooting, classes have been canceled for Thursday and Friday, affecting the entire school community.
Jefferson County officials were alerted to an “active assailant” at approximately 12:24 PM. During a press conference, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that three students were shot and later transported to Common Spirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.
By Thursday morning, one of the students remained hospitalized in critical condition, while the other had non-life-threatening injuries and was reportedly not under hospital care, according to trauma medical director Brian Blackwood. The male student suspected of the shooting unfortunately died from his injuries later that evening, as confirmed by the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities stated they did not believe any law enforcement officials fired their weapons during the incident. Officers were set to re-enter the school in the afternoon to investigate whether shots were fired inside or outside the building and to determine what type of weapons were involved.
Initially, Jefferson County officials sent out alerts around 12:40 PM to inform the public about the active threat at the school. Parents were advised against picking up their children due to ongoing developments at the scene.
The county also issued an “Emergency Watch Alert” as reports of an active shooter circulated in the area. Colorado Governor Jared Polis commented on the situation via social media, stating that he was monitoring developments and that state troopers were assisting local law enforcement. He emphasized that students should have the right to attend school safely, free from fear.
In response to the event, authorities established a unified command center at a nearby elementary school, which would serve as a resource and information hub for affected families.
