Media and reporters commend Charlie Kirk following assassination

Following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk on the University of Utah campus, various media figures and liberal journalists who often criticized him were surprisingly vocal in their condolences. They acknowledged his significant impact on the conservative political landscape.

Prominent voices from outlets such as the Washington Post and Brian Stelter from CNN expressed their sorrow over Kirk’s death, offering their sympathies to his family and recognizing his political acumen. Stelter noted that Kirk, who was only 31, was an exceptionally skilled political organizer who connected a range of influencers—from TikTok creators to public speakers—in a dynamic way.

Kirk was shot during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, where he was addressing a large audience. Reportedly, he was at what was described as the “I prove the wrong table” when the attack occurred.

On Thursday, the FBI revealed they had located a powerful bolt-action rifle believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, although the suspect remains at large.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA at just 18 years old and cultivated a formidable grassroots movement closely tied to the Republican Party. The New York Times editorial board also condemned his assassination, expressing their condolences to his friends and family. They stated that, despite their differences with Kirk on many issues, indifference towards his murder is troubling.

While the Washington Post’s editorial board praised Kirk’s approach to conservative activism, they reflected on his life, noting that he was a husband and father who established a substantial online following and frequently engaged in campus debates.

In a piece published by New York Times columnist Ezra Klein, he remarked on Kirk’s unique ability to connect with students, asserting that Kirk was one of the most effective persuaders of his time. Klein suggested that Kirk’s presence on college campuses significantly shifted the perspectives of young voters in the recent elections.
