Two repeat offenders, both struggling with mental health issues, have been charged with the murder of Ukrainian refugee Irina Zaltoska in Charlotte, North Carolina. Records reveal that their family has a history of criminal activity. DeCarlos Brown Jr.’s brother, Stacey Brown, 33, is currently serving a 36-year sentence for murder and other offenses. Their father, DeCarlos Brown Sr., has a criminal record that includes a lengthy stint in prison and probation for theft and weapon charges from 1990 to 2014. DeCarlos Brown Jr.—who has been arrested over 12 times—has raised eyebrows regarding Charlotte’s law enforcement practices after allegedly stabbing the 23-year-old Salzka on a train on August 22.
Jeremiah, another of DeCarlos Brown Sr.’s sons, mentioned that both his father and brother have troubled pasts, suggesting a recurring theme of criminality in the family. The connections between DeCarlos Jr. and Stacey, in terms of their parents, remain unclear. The implications of their backgrounds seem to put Charlotte’s approach to crime under the microscope.
Stacey Brown’s past includes serious offenses dating back to 2012, where he was involved in a string of violent crimes including a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man during a robbery. He ultimately pleaded guilty to various charges, including second-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, among others. Meanwhile, DeCarlos Brown Sr. has faced multiple convictions over the years, including possessing stolen goods and a weapon on school grounds.
The history of the Brown family adds a troubling layer to the case against DeCarlos Brown Jr., now facing local and federal charges for the murder of Salzka. Following a five-year prison sentence for armed robbery, Brown Jr.’s mother was reported to have become increasingly erratic, even leading to her being involuntarily committed at one point.
Despite this troubled background, a judge released Brown Jr. in January with minimal restrictions, only for him to be accused of murder seven months later when Salzka was found bleeding on a train after suffering a stab wound to her throat.
Upon his arrest, Brown claimed to his sister that he had been assaulted, but his explanations seemed bewildering. The tragic death of Iryna Zarutska, a young woman with aspirations, has been described as a direct consequence of lenient criminal policies that allow dangerous individuals to remain in society. Attorney General Pam Bondi has publicly called for severe repercussions for Brown Jr., emphasizing the need to ensure he faces the harshest penalties for such a heinous act.
