Zohran Mamdani receives commendation from Jamie Raskin while leading New York Democrats continue to refrain from giving endorsements in the NYC mayoral election.

He’s made some connections in influential circles, to a degree.

This week, socialist Zohran Mamdani received remarkable endorsements from leading National Democrats, yet key figures in New York still haven’t voiced their support for the party’s mayoral candidates.

Representatives Pat Ryan (D-NY) and Jamie Ruskin (D-MD) expressed their backing for Mamdani.

“He genuinely aims to rebuild the FDR coalition, focused on enhancing the lives of the working and middle class in his city,” Ruskin mentioned, as noted in an article by the New York Times.

Mamdani also caught the eye of Rahm Emmanuel, the former Chicago mayor who’s not well-regarded among progressives, suggesting that some of the previous tensions within certain party factions may be easing.

However, Mamdani’s recent endorsements don’t seem to include support from New York’s four major Democrats: Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Though Jeffries met with the leading candidate twice over the summer and Schumer interacted with Mamdani on Monday, neither has committed to supporting him.

“Their discussion went well,” noted Angelo Roefalo, Schumer’s spokesperson. “They have a strong rapport and will continue their conversations.”

The ongoing silence from prominent Empire State Democrats surfaces only 54 days ahead of the November election.

Mamdani’s unexpected win over former governor Andrew Cuomo in June has proven to be challenging for many national Democrats.

Still, Mamdani has been steadily accumulating support from both local and national Democratic figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Support also comes from New York State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins and state Sen. Liz Kruger, though state Sen. Carl Heastie, the Assembly chair, remains notably quiet.

According to the Times, Ruskin has encouraged Democrats to rally behind Mamdani, emphasizing various political trends in his favor.

In another recent meeting, Emmanuel had breakfast with Mamdani, where the candidate sought advice from former Obama administration officials on strategies for achieving policy goals and managing large cities.

“He was clearly thinking ahead about how to hit the ground running, and his questions reflected that,” Emmanuel said, as reported in the Times. “I doubt he’ll spend his time just throwing rhetorical grenades.”
