Suns reporter is let go following multiple posts about Charlie Kirk.

An NBA beat reporter was let go following his remarks on social media regarding the death of Charlie Kirk.

Gerald Brugett, a reporter for PHNX Sports, stirred up controversy on X after a conservative commentator was shot at an event in Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

His X thread started with, “The ‘political difference’ is not the same as venting hateful rhetoric on a daily basis. Lamenting a life dedicated to that cause is not the same as celebrating gun violence.” He insisted that clarity was essential.

He went on to question the varied reactions to political violence, asking, “If you’re saddened by today’s incident, why is your reaction different when it comes to numerous videos supporting school shootings or other tragic events?”

Bourguet expressed concern about people prioritizing politeness over standing firm against hatred. He noted, “I don’t really care if you think respect for the deceased is declining.”

While PHNX Sports did not mention his name in their statement, reports indicated Bourguet was the one terminated. They stated, “The opinions expressed by employees do not represent the views of PHNX or the AllCity network,” emphasizing their seriousness about violence and community safety.

Updates on the Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk Shooting

Bourguet became the second notable figure in sports to lose his job over comments about Kirk. Charlie Lock, communications coordinator for the NFL’s Panthers, was also dismissed for “insensitive social media posts” following the shooting.

The Panthers stated, “The views expressed by our employees are their own and do not represent the Carolina Panthers. We do not tolerate violence and take these matters seriously.”

As for Charlie Kirk, he received recognition from the Yankees the same evening, including a moment of silence before their game against the Tigers. In another reaction, Giants rookie quarterback Jackson Dart condemned the shooting, expressing his disgust and sadness over the incident.
