Charlie Kirk’s Interview with Jair Bolsonaro
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, interviewed former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in February 2023 during Bolsonaro’s visit to the United States. This was Bolsonaro’s first significant interview after his inauguration.
During their conversation, which touched on various conservative themes, they discussed the importance of gun rights, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. Kirk described the judicial situation in Brazil as a “warning to America” about judicial power.
Bolsonaro’s trip came after he took office following a narrow defeat in the controversial 2022 election against President Lula da Silva. Notably, Bolsonaro also offered a speech at Turning Point USA’s event titled “The Power of the People” earlier that month.
The interview occurred about a month after the January 8th riot in Brasilia, which the Supreme Federal Court (STF) accused Bolsonaro of organizing as part of a coup attempt to overturn the election’s outcome. Bolsonaro responded to these accusations by stating that no such organization took place.
Kirk questioned Bolsonaro about the separation of powers, especially regarding justice, and compared the Brazilian context to that of the United States. Bolsonaro acknowledged a “general consensus” that the STF had overextended its authority but noted Brazil’s inability to provide adequate checks and balances on judicial power.
Since then, Bolsonaro and his family have faced numerous legal challenges, primarily from Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the STF. These measures include house arrest and heavy police surveillance, with Bolsonaro facing an eight-year political ban.
A significant ongoing trial against Bolsonaro relates to allegations of conspiring with others to orchestrate a coup to negate the 2022 election results. This trial is reaching a critical point this week, as a Judiciary Committee will vote on Bolsonaro’s fate.
STF Justice Cármen Lúcia is set to cast her vote soon, with the stakes being high; a simple majority is needed for a conviction. If found guilty, Bolsonaro, who is now 70, could face up to 43 years in prison.
In a recent episode of his show, Kirk addressed Bolsonaro’s situation, drawing parallels to a “massive Joe Biden-style law crackdown.” He expressed concerns over judicial overreach, saying, “Over the past 100 years, American power has focused primarily on unelected bureaucracy and judiciary. We should look to other countries for what this leads to.”

Kirk remarked, “Bolsonaro is going to trial because he seems to be implicated in a coup plot. The Brazilian president commented, ‘Prove his innocence,’ indicating the presumption of guilt in this scenario.”
Following Kirk’s episode, the U.S. took measures against what President Trump called a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro. In July, Trump signed an executive order targeting Brazil, declaring it a national security threat, which included significant tariffs on Brazilian goods.
Kirk also mentioned the tragedy surrounding his colleague, who was recently shot and killed at an event. Bolsonaro has been restricted from communicating publicly due to his ongoing house arrest.
Rep. Eduardo Bolsonaro honored Kirk in a letter, noting the deep impact of such a loss and highlighting Kirk’s bravery and strong principles. He described him as more than just a political activist, emphasizing his influence on youth across different countries.
“He initiated movements and events, making substantial contributions to political discussions, including the Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, in 2022,” he noted, reflecting on how Kirk’s work resonated with Brazilian youth.
