Vatican Report Sparks Controversy
Recently, the Vatican put out a report from Synod Study Group 9, which is one of the ten groups created by Pope Francis in 2024 to address contentious topics.
The document, titled “Theological standards and synodal methodology for common recognition of new doctrinal, pastoral, and ethical issues.”, included testimonies from two gay Catholic men who are in same-sex civil marriages.
This report has stirred up significant debate within the Catholic community. Many traditional Catholics and some evangelical Christians view it as a troubling move that could undermine the Church’s longstanding teachings regarding homosexuality by putting personal experiences above established doctrine.
On one episode of “The Liz Wheeler Show,” Liz Wheeler, a self-identified devout Catholic, discussed her concerns regarding the report.
She highlighted a sense of urgency among some believers who see the report as signaling a forthcoming shift in church doctrine.
Wheeler emphasized, “One of these documents from the synod is not a doctrine of the Church. It does not have the power to change the doctrine. It’s just an advisory report for the Pope on how to approach these pastoral issues,” adding that the Pope might accept or reject any suggestions made.
As of now, Pope Leo XIV hasn’t officially endorsed or dismissed the report.
She pointed out that even if the Pope were to accept it, it wouldn’t be binding. “It’s not dogma,” she stated.
Despite this, Wheeler expressed concerns that the pastoral nature of the advice could conflict with the Church’s established teachings. She characterized any potential deviation as a “moral travesty.”
Having read the report herself, Wheeler noted the ambiguity in the language. It was unclear whether the synod was merely summarizing the testimonies of the two gay Catholic couples or if it was endorsing their perspectives and lifestyles.
“A generous interpretation could be that listening to those struggling with sin can guide them towards salvation. It’s valuable to understand what leads someone to their struggles,” she reasoned.
However, she clarified that the main goal should always be leading individuals to Christ, not condoning or redefining their sins.
Wheeler admitted feeling hesitant to take a lenient view of the report, given its unclear messaging.
“Why can’t we be straightforward about whether we accept that testimony or just summarize it, especially knowing it could cause confusion among believers?” she questioned.
As for a more defensive view of the report, Wheeler suggested it might be a genuine attempt to shift Church doctrine. She noted that advocacy groups for homosexuality could misconstrue the Church’s teachings to promote a new standard.
Wheeler found herself oscillating between liberal and conservative interpretations but ultimately emphasized the importance of adhering to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It states that while homosexual acts are inherently disordered and against natural law, those with deep-seated homosexual tendencies deserve acceptance, respect, and compassion. However, they are called to live chaste lives through self-control, prayer, and friendship.
“This is the official teaching of the Catholic Church regarding homosexuality, and that’s a beautiful truth,” she concluded.
