Tiana Mangakahia, a former star of Syracuse basketball, has passed away at 30 following her fight with breast cancer.

The sports community is grieving the loss of former WNBA player Tiana Mangakahia, who passed away on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Australian lost her second battle with cancer, surrounded by her family.

Her family shared the news via social media, stating, “She left us on September 11th surrounded by family, friends, and lots of love.” They described Tiana as a “shining light,” who had an impact on everyone she met through her kindness and strength. They expressed profound grief, saying, “Our hearts hurt without her.” They concluded with, “We love you endlessly, Tiana, and will always miss you.”

Messages of support began pouring in from around the world almost immediately.

Basketball legend Lauren Jackson shared heartfelt sentiments, while fellow Australian player Maddie Garrick said, “I’m lost for words. Send lots of love and support to your family, beautiful soul! Rest in peace, T.” Others, including Russian player Yana Kosogortseva and Australian talents like Mitch McCarron and Page Bueckers, also left warm comments.

Australia’s Olympian Jess Fox made a comment as well, and Basketball Australia issued a tribute reflecting on Tiana’s courageous spirit. They noted how she inspired others during her struggles and pointed out her incredible return to the court earlier this year, demonstrating her love for the game.

The former Sydney Fire WNBL player had previously overcome cancer four years ago, shortly after being named to the Opals Olympic Training Team. Following her 2019 diagnosis, she went through extensive treatment, including chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, before making a triumphant return in 2021 as a student-athlete at Syracuse University.

However, in 2023, Tiana faced a devastating diagnosis of stage four breast cancer, which regrettably forced her to retire from basketball for medical reasons. She made a brief comeback with the NBL 1 Team Southern District Spartan in June, but her health declined swiftly, ultimately leading her to step away from the sport on September 3rd.

Just days before her passing, Tiana informed supporters about her deteriorating health. She shared, “In the last five days, my health has shifted negatively. Cancer is progressing, and I’m experiencing significant physical decline.” She emphasized the importance of spending time with her loved ones during this period and requested privacy.

Despite her struggles, she remained hopeful, stating her gratitude for the support she received, saying, “Your love and strength will take me more than you know.”
