Trump announces suspect 'in custody' for Charlie Kirk murder attempt

On Friday, President Trump shared updates about the arrest of a suspect connected to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

In a live interview with “Fox & Friends,” Trump expressed confidence, saying, “We think we have him with a high degree of certainty,” indicating he learned this information shortly before the 8 AM broadcast.

“The individual who targeted him was someone very close to him,” Trump added.

He made it clear, “I hope he is guilty. I hope he will be sentenced to death.”

Reports indicate that the suspect fired from approximately 200 yards away while Kirk was seated in a tent at the university’s Loss Center. This detail was relayed by authorities and sources to the Post prior to the arrest.

Initially, the suspect was described as a man in jeans and a black shirt, equipped with a long rifle, positioned atop the east building of the school library.

Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA, was engaging with his two fathers when he was shot during a discussion at an outdoor event at the Orem campus—this occurred when gunfire erupted.

The sound of a single gunshot disrupted the event, causing chaos among the thousands present. Kirk reacted visibly, appearing to clutch his neck.

A multi-agency manhunt ensued, involving the FBI, Orem Police, the Utah Department of Public Safety, and campus police.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, although it was later clarified that the initial person detained was not the assailant.

With the investigation ongoing, the FBI created a tip line for anyone with further information and announced a reward of up to $100,000 for details leading to the shooter.

In a statement that resonated with many, Trump remarked, “The great and legendary Charlie Kirk is dead. He had an extraordinary understanding of America’s youth.” He later expressed his sorrow and anger in a video, decrying Kirk’s “vicious assassination.”

Trump emphasized the impact Kirk had on millions, stating, “Everyone who knew him is united in shock and fear,” dubbing him a “martyr of truth and freedom.” The president also noted, “This is a dark moment for America.”

After being shot, Kirk was rushed to a local hospital for emergency surgery; however, a nurse later conveyed to a friend that he had died.

Kirk was well-known for his interactive “Proof Me Wrong” debates on university campuses, where he encouraged constructive discourse. Ironically, he was in the midst of this highlight of his “American comeback tour” when tragedy struck.

He leaves behind his wife, former Miss Arizona Erica Franzbe, and their two young children.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his condolences, stating, “It’s a dark day for our state and a tragic day for our country,” adding that he wanted to emphasize the nature of the crime as a political assassination.

“Let’s not forget that the death penalty is still an option in Utah,” he concluded.
