Concerns Over Celebratory Comments Following Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued a warning regarding the behavior of military personnel and civilians who seem to be applauding or joking about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“We monitor this closely and address it immediately. It’s simply unacceptable,” Hegseth said on social media on Thursday.
This comment came in response to a statement from Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, who earlier condemned any celebration of the assassination, stating, “It’s unacceptable for military personnel and civilians from the Department of Defense to celebrate or laugh at the assassination of fellow Americans. The Department of Defense will not tolerate that.”
Neither Hegseth nor Parnell specified any examples of individuals who may have reacted positively to Kirk’s death.
Kirk, a 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically shot in the neck on Wednesday while on the campus of Utah Valley University. Authorities later identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson from Utah.
The assassination has drawn condemnation from politicians across the spectrum, including past presidents, yet some social media users have expressed approval of the act, provoking significant outrage.
Military leadership has also cautioned their personnel about making inappropriate comments regarding Kirk’s assassination, with Navy Secretary John Phelan emphasizing that any such indiscretions would be addressed promptly. “I know of posts that sympathize with those who were assassinated,” he noted on social media late Thursday. “I want to make it very clear: any actions by Navy Department personnel that discredit us will be addressed swiftly and effectively.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard acknowledged being aware of inappropriate social media behavior from its members related to recent political violence, though details were not disclosed. “Such activities contradict our core values. Together with DHS, we are actively investigating this behavior and ensuring appropriate accountability,” the statement read. “We understand that these actions have ramifications and are committed to ensuring our personnel uphold the trust bestowed upon us by the American public.”
