Fans are calling out TMZ after they perceived staff members laughing and cheering in the background during a livestream when news broke about the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on Wednesday. TMZ chief Harvey Levin has denied these allegations, yet many viewers remain dissatisfied with his explanation regarding the cheers and laughter.

This incident unfolded just moments before Levin was introduced on the show, following reports that Kirk did not survive the attack.

Almost immediately, TMZ was inundated with angry viewers who expressed their frustration over the background sounds of cheers and applause coinciding with the news of Kirk’s passing.

In response to the backlash, Levin and co-host Charles Lativiadiere shared a video clarifying that staff members were not celebrating Kirk’s death, but were instead reacting to a police car chase video that concluded with the suspect’s capture. Despite this, they acknowledged that the timing of the cheer was “deaf to the tone” of the situation and apologized for any misunderstanding.

While the “car chase” rationale might have eased tensions somewhat, social media user Peggy Bolton raised serious doubts. He compared the timing of the police chase with the announcement of Charlie Kirk’s death and found significant discrepancies that undermined TMZ’s explanation.
