Trump Signals Interest in Political Rivalry
President Donald Trump seems ready for a political tussle.
On Saturday, he took to social media to invite challengers after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) endorsed Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), a candidate opposing Trump.
“Is anyone interested in running against underdog Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District? Remember how she moved back to her original district when it became clear she couldn’t win?” Trump remarked on Truth Social. He referred to her as a “true carpetbagger.”
Boebert, who has relocated to the more conservative 4th District for the 2024 election, appeared alongside Massey at campaign events in Kentucky on Friday. She’s currently tackling a strong primary challenge from Ed Gullane, a retired Navy SEAL who has Trump’s endorsement.
Massey, on the other hand, has been struggling to keep his seat. Trump has accused him of dishonesty, even going so far as to label him an “Epstein-level figure.”
Massey responded to Trump’s critiques during an ABC interview in February, suggesting that Trump, despite his promises of transparency, has connections to controversial figures. He’s also been vocal about his disapproval of Trump’s major policies, especially regarding foreign affairs.
Trump has not held back his disdain for Massie, branding him as “the worst ‘Republican’ in our nation’s history.” He stated that Boebert’s support for Massey warranted a challenge in the primaries.
“Anyone that stupid deserves to fight the good fight in the Primary!” Trump tweeted.
Boebert, known for her controversial exit from the Beetlejuice musical after inappropriate behavior, has been a staunch Trump ally. However, their relationship appears to be fraying recently.
She has had disagreements with Trump, particularly after she backed Massey’s bill related to Epstein and criticized Trump for vetoing a critical water project for southern Colorado.
“Yes, I saw the president’s post. No, I’m not angry and I’m not offended. I understood the risks when I backed my friend Thomas Massey,” Boebert stated in response to Trump’s comments.
While Trump had previously supported Boebert, he insinuated that he would reevaluate his endorsement if a more suitable candidate emerged.
“I would be honored if you would withdraw your support and rally behind a better alternative. Let me know, or you could announce your candidacy. I’ll be there for you!” Trump added.
